Lead Partners

The Collaborative’s aim is to improve the social determinants of health for underserved and underrepresented residents through research, community engagement, and training. The lead partners represent anchor institutions with deep and proven experience carrying out similar projects and include Worcester State University’s Latino Education Institute, faculty from the Health Sciences Department and the University of Massachusetts Boston’s Gaston Institute, faculty affiliated with UMass Boston – Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Partnership to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE), and John Snow Inc (JSI).

The Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy.

The Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy established in 1989 by the Massachusetts Legislature in response to a need for improved understanding of the Latino experience in the Commonwealth. Now in its 30th year, the Gastón Institute continues in its mission of informing policymakers about issues vital to the state’s growing Latino community and providing information and analysis necessary for effective Latino participation in public policy.

Worcester State University (WSU)

Founded in 1874 as a teacher-training school, Worcester State University (WSU) offers 61 undergraduate majors and minors, 31 master’s degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, and advanced graduate study certificates, as well as real-time access to online, noncredit professional training to 6,100 students.

The Latino Education Institute of WSU

 The Latino Education Institute of WSU strives to improve the academic achievement and well- being of Latino students and their families. A primary goal of the Institute is to engage faculty in: the examination of the condition of Latinos, development of the analytic tools necessary to support community advancement, and informing the public debate about health, transnational communities, education, family, and a host of issues impacting Latinos. The LEI provides direct services to more than 2,100 families in Worcester and Springfield.

John Snow, Inc., and JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc.

JSI is a public health research and consulting organization based in Boston, MA with expertise in program evaluation, public health, clinical care, research methods, health policy, environmental health, training/capacity building, and information systems. Since its inception in 1978, JSI has grown to a staff of more than 400 and has worked in 107 countries and all 50 states.


Community Partners

The project is developing a comprehensive multi-city, multi-sector active network as the backbone of this effort. This growing list includes: Latino Education Institute @ Worcester and Springfield, Hyde Square Task Force, Lynn Community Health Center, Lawrence Community Works, Greater Boston Latino Network, Worcester Interfaith, Massachusetts COVID-19 Equity Taskforce, Boston COVID Equity Task Force, and Worcester COVID Equity Task Force. Partners are essential to identifying the data architecture of the knowledge hub, specifically what theme or work areas are deemed most essential to advancing universal vaccination and an equitable recovery. Through an iterative process partners contribute information and analysis to the thematic areas detailed in the virtual hub and engage in producing new fonts of knowledge with collaborative researchers. Through these activities, and capacity building work – clear, actionable recommendations, policies, and best practices will be cultivated and amplified.
